companies listed on the bourse based on their market capitalizations. It stands for National Fifty, coined by the NSE on 21 April 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors and traders use the Nifty 50 as a benchmark to monitor the performance of the overall Indian stock market. That is because the index houses some of the most prominent and highly liquid firms on the exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nifty includes stocks of companies spanned<a href=\"https:\/\/archives.nseindia.com\/content\/indices\/ind_nifty50.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> across 14 sectors<\/a>, including healthcare, power, chemicals, and consumer durables.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_NIFTY_Calculated\"><\/span><strong>How is NIFTY Calculated?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The float-adjusted and market capitalization method is used to calculate the Nifty index. The concept accounts for only the freely tradable shares of a company, excluding restricted stock. <a href=\"https:\/\/uat1.gettogetherfinance.com\/blog\/what-is-market-capitalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Market capitalization<\/a> is then calculated based on this adjusted float.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This method offers a clearer picture of a company&#8217;s market value as it considers only shares available for public trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the formula to arrive at the <strong>Nifty<\/strong> index value is,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[Market Capitalization = Share Price * Equity Capital]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[Free-float market capitalization = Share Price * Equity Capital * Investable Weight Factor (IWF)]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>[Index Value = Current Market Value\/(1000 * Base Market Capital)]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where current market value: The weighted total market cap of all 50 companies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Base market capital: The weighted total market cap of all 50 companies in the base period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investable weight factor: Helps find the shares available for trading and does not include the shares bought by the government, employees, and promoters of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For calculation, the base period is 3<sup>rd<\/sup> November 1996, the base value is 1000 points, and the base capital is \u20b92.06 Tn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eligibility_Criteria_for_NIFTY_Index_Listing\"><\/span><strong>Eligibility Criteria for NIFTY Index Listing<\/strong> <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uat1.gettogetherfinance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Eligibility-Criteria-for-NIFTY-Index-Listing-1024x207.webp\" alt=\"Eligibility Criteria for NIFTY Index Listing\" class=\"wp-image-3474\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are the criteria for companies to be a part of the <strong>Nifty<\/strong> market index:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Domicile\"><\/span><strong>Domicile<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The company under consideration must be registered in India and have its stocks listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat1.gettogetherfinance.com\/blog\/nse-vs-bse\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uat1.gettogetherfinance.com\/blog\/nse-vs-bse\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Listing_History\"><\/span><strong>Listing History<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The company must be listed on the Nifty exchange for at least six months. However, the period is reduced to one month for IPOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Market_Cap\"><\/span><strong>Market Cap<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s free-float market capitalization should be at least 1.5X that of the smallest constituent in the Nifty 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Liquidity\"><\/span><strong>Liquidity<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The company should have adequate liquidity and have traded its shares at least 90% of the trading sessions at a maximum average cost of 0.50% six months before the index review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trading_Frequency\"><\/span><strong>Trading Frequency<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s stocks must have a trading frequency of 100% six months before the index review. That means the stock has been traded in every trading session during that time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Voting_Rights\"><\/span><strong>Voting Rights<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies offering stocks with differential voting rights (DVR) can also make it to the Nifty 50 index. That said, such stocks should have a DVR free float of at least a tenth of the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/uat1.gettogetherfinance.com\/blog\/free-float-market-capitalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free-float market cap<\/a> and 100% of the free-float market cap of the last security in the index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Security_Type\"><\/span><strong>Security Type<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The company must have been included in the Nifty 100 index, and its stocks are available for trading in the NSE\u2019s Futures &amp; Options (F&amp;O) category.
